The Hidden Roots Of Trauma- Why Shadow Work is the Key To Healing

When it comes to healing from trauma, many of us focus on the surface—managing symptoms, avoiding triggers, or trying to “think positive.” While these approaches may offer temporary relief, they rarely address the deeper wounds keeping us stuck in cycles of pain. They are a distraction, a temporary bandaid, or what they call in spirituality, it is “ spiritual bypassing”. We can try to run, avoid, and suppress for as long as we want, but what many do not understand is that you are simply just prolonging your suffering. The pain, the suffering will always catch up to you, and until you surrender you will stay in the cycle of the suffering. We have to sit with our darkness on this path, as much as we have to honor our light within. True healing requires us to go beneath the surface, to uncover and heal the hidden roots of our trauma. This is where shadow work becomes an essential part of the journey.

What Is Shadow Work?

Shadow work is the process of exploring the parts of ourselves we’ve hidden, suppressed, or denied. These “shadow” aspects often stem from childhood wounds, societal conditioning, or traumatic experiences. We bury them because they feel too painful, too shameful, or too overwhelming to face. But these buried pieces don’t disappear—they linger in our subconscious, shaping our beliefs, behaviors, and relationships in ways we may not even realize.

Trauma, whether caused by narcissistic abuse, religious oppression, or other forms of pain, often creates deep emotional scars that hide in the shadow. These unhealed wounds can manifest as self-doubt, codependency, toxic relationship patterns, anxiety, or feelings of being “stuck.” Shadow work invites us to shine a light on these hidden parts and reclaim the power we’ve lost to them.

    • Journaling: Reflect on patterns in your life that feel unhelpful or painful. Ask yourself, “What might be the root cause of this?”

    • Mindfulness: Pay attention to your emotional triggers. What feelings or memories come up when you’re triggered? These can point to unresolved shadow material.

    • Therapeutic Support: Working with a trauma-informed coach or therapist can provide a safe and guided space for shadow work. Healing trauma often requires support from someone who understands the complexity of your journey.

    • Self-Compassion Practices: Shadow work can bring up difficult emotions, so it’s crucial to practice self-compassion along the way. Speak to yourself with kindness, as you would to a friend.

    • Plant Medicine: Psychedelics facilitate shadow work by helping us access deep subconscious layers, unveiling suppressed emotions and patterns, and creating a safe space for profound healing and self-integration.

Shadow work is not easy—it asks you to face what you’ve spent years avoiding. But the reward is profound: freedom. By healing the hidden roots of your trauma, you open the door to a life of authenticity, joy, and wholeness.
